Putnam County Enhanced 9-1-1’s history began when the Putnam County Commissioners proposed to the citizens of the County a tax bond of a half-cent on sales in 1998. After the bond passed, the Putnam County Commissioners appointed a Board of Directors to govern the implementation of 9-1-1. There are 7 members of the Board of Directors, including the Chairman-at-Large, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. The Board hired a Coordinator to administrate the progress of the 9-1-1 systems. GeoComm, a mapping addressing and consultation firm, received the bid to assist the formation of 9-1-1. The Putnam County Building Trades Class of Putnam County R-1 Schools were hired to build a Communications Center adjacent to the Putnam County Sheriff’s office in the basement of the Courthouse. Road intersection signs and equipment was purchased after the necessary bidding processes were completed. Telecommunicators (dispatchers) were hired and trained, and testing of the equipment was completed. The result of all the efforts involved has been Enhanced 9-1-1 on-line and available to the citizens of Putnam County since November 1, 2002, drastically improving the means and methods of emergency response and dispatch to this community.
