HISTORICAL MUSEUM:

The Putnam County Historical Museum houses many interesting and unique displays, including artifacts, tools, and dishes from days gone by.  You will find on display a beautiful hand painted Limomges punch bowl, a horse-drawn hearse, a large weaver's loom, rope beds, lovely antique furniture, quilts, dolls, coal mining tools and memorabilia.

As Putnam County was the home to the first Scheaffer Pen Company and Putnam Dyes we value any memorabilia to share with all that visit.

Please plan an afternoon to step back in time at the Museum.

Hours 1 to 4 Friday and Saturday, May through September.

Unionville City Park:

            The Unionville City Park is a source of pride for the entire community.  Facilities include several shelter houses, play ground equipment and supervised wading pool for youngsters, a basketball court, two tennis courts sand volley ball and restrooms.  Also on the grounds is the Cub Scout Building that is available to the public for social events.

                        You can step back in time when you visit the “Little Red School House” located by the Scout building.  (Appointments can be made with city hall for viewing) 

Adjacent to the park is the R.V. Campgrounds with 45 electrical hook ups. Restroom facilities are also available on grounds.  As the park is the home of the Putnam County Fair many other facilities are on the grounds available to the public.  We hope you come and enjoy our park grounds.

McCalment Park:

            Located 400 South 22nd Street

                        McCalment Park provides wholesome fun for the entire family.  It features two ball diamonds, with dug outs and bleachers; refreshment stand is open during games.  Restroom facilities are also available on the grounds.

                        The park also features the indoor facility, being a gym for basketball and volleyball games and other meeting rooms available.

F.E.R.N. Trail:

Unionville City Lake

                                North of Unionville, off Highway 5

 

Nature trail and picnic area located next to the Unionville city lake off of Highway 5 north of Unionville.  Created and maintained by community volunteers effort.

 

 

 

Mineral Hills State Forest:

                        4 miles southeast of Unionville

                        (off state highway F)

            Mature forests provide serene areas to enjoy trees and woodland wildflowers.  Watch for ring-necked pheasant, bobwhite quail, wild turkeys, cottontail rabbits, squirrels and white-tailed deer.  Hunting and fishing and horseback riding are permitted.  Primitive camping on walk-in basis.

Rebel’s Cove Wildlife Area:

            Located in extreme northeast Putnam County

                        (on Route N)

            This stretch on the Chariton River is one of the few unchanged, unchanneled parts of the river. The cove has some outstanding wetland habitat, as well as a natural stretch of north Missouri river.  The winding channel has created many oxbow lakes and marshes that attract Canada geese, muskrat, beaver and river otters.    Native wildlife is abundant and river otters have been reintroduced here.  In the summer you may visit a great blue heron rookery, and in the winter months it is not uncommon to see a bald eagle floating overhead or perched in a treetop overlooking the river.  Hunting, fishing, hiking and camping is permitted is designated areas.

 

 

 

YEARLY EVENTS:

          Putnam County Fair:

                        One of the largest county fairs in the state, held at the Unionville city

            park beginning the day after Labor Day and continuing the remainder of the

            week.  It features a natural amphitheater where you may enjoy two daily

            performances by Nashville county music artists and local talent.  One low

            -price ticket will allow gate admission and let you enjoy all exhibits, show

            and entertainment for the week.  Exhibits include 4-H, craft and needlework,

            quilts, woodworking, flowers, vegetables, art and of course the livestock and

            poultry.  You may also enjoy tractor, pick-up and horse pulling contests,

            livestock shows, and many other events.  Food stand and camping facilities

            with hook-ups are available on the grounds.

            Fourth of July Celebration:

                        Unionville’s Fourth of July Celebration is sponsored by the American

            Legion and supported by various civic organizations.  There is a parade with

            floats by local merchants and organizations and many children’s entries.  You

             may participate in volleyball, horse shoe pitching, and children’s games.  There

            will be live entertainment, music and talent.  Food is served and the evening

             fireworks, provided by community donations, are spectacular!  Fireworks may

             also be viewed by the public at Lake Thunderhead where the show is

            coordinated with the city event.

            Indian Hills Country & Old Time Music Festival:

                                    Old time country and bluegrass music ring across the hills

            surrounding Livonia the 3rd weekend in June.  Musicians and spectators from

             at least half a dozen states converge on Livonia beginning with the Friday

            evening open stage and staying for gospel music Sunday till noon.  Food is

            served on the grounds, with home made ice cream available all three days for

             a reasonable price.  No admission is charged, but donations to defray expenses

             are appreciated.  Camping is available with limited electrical hook-ups. 

            Modern restrooms and showers are available.

            Lucerne Stock Show:

                                    Held the second week in August, the village fair was established

            in 1939.  Features include a talent contest, tractor pull, senior Olympics, livestock

             show, kid’s games, and parade.  There is a food stand on the grounds.
